Profile
I am currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Biomedical Sciences, The University of Hong Kong. I obtained my bachelor and doctoral degrees at HKU. I then joined Imperial College London for postdoctoral training. At ICL, I studied the roles of complement system in the induction and resolution of inflammation, particularly its contribution to systemic autoimmune diseases and cancers. My work demonstrated that C1q, the initiator of the classical complement pathway promotes tumour progression by facilitating cancer cell seeding and angiogenesis (Bossi et al. PNAS 2014; Ling et al. Nature Communications 2016). More recently, I identified C1q as a key metabolic regulator of CD8+T cells that restrains their pathogenic responses during autoimmunity and chronic viral infections (Ling et al. Science 2018). I returned to HKU in 2019 and my current research focuses on the metabolic reprogramming of exhausted CD8+T cells in chronic inflammatory diseases. My laboratory employs the emerging technologies from the field of immunometabolism and multiplex phenotyping to assess the effects of sustained inflammation on exhausted CD8+T cell differentiation and population diversity.
