Profile
Dr. Lin Zhang obtained her Ph.D. in School of Biomedical Sciences at the CUHK in 2013 and received post-doctoral training in the Department of Medicine & Therapeutics (2013-2015) and later School of Biomedical Sciences (2015-2017) in CUHK. Dr. Zhang joined the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care as a Research Assistant Professor in August 2017. Dr. Zhang’s laboratory is focused on investigating the crosstalk between microbes and the host, including antimicrobial peptide and autophagy. Recent findings suggest that cathelicidin, one of the key antimicrobial peptides, could protect against Helicobacter pylori infection, ulcerative colitis and colon cancer. Dysregulation of autophagy is also implicated in H. pylori infection. Update studies demonstrate reduced lysosomal clearance of autophagosome could promote survival and colonization of H. pylori. In this connection, vitamin D3 activates the autolysosomal degradation function against H. pylori through PDIA3 receptor. With the completion of TCGA and HMP project, the amount of sequencing and expression data of different cancer types and microbiome datasets is gradually increasing. In this connection, her recent study discovered how cancer affects and reshapes the human genome, bringing new breakthroughs to the theory of human evolution. She is also fascinated with and actively engaged in microbiome basic and translational study, with the aiming to explore the utility of developing novel therapeutic approaches to reshape/manipulate the dysbiotic microbiota to prevent diseases.
She has published over 52 papers in peer-reviewed journals (12 of them as the first, co-first or corresponding author) and 3 book chapters, including papers in Gut, Annals of Oncology, Science Advance, Autophagy, Seminar of Cancer Biology, Seminar of Cell Developmental Biology, Journal of Pathology and Journal of Immunology. As Principal Investigator, Dr. Zhang obtained seven external competitive and three internal grants with a total amount of HK$ 7.66 million. She has received several awards including Fellowship of Hong Kong – Scotland Partners in Post-Doctoral Research 2016, Excellent Oral Presentation Award in Beijing 2013, Outstanding Oral Presentation Award in Hong Kong Pharmacology Society 2012 and Best Oral Presentation Award in SBS-CUHK 2012.
